About 10:00 a.m., Lex found out that her boss had called a meeting of her company’s employees at a local Starbucks (everyone in San Antonio or linked to the San Antonio office now telecommutes) from noon to 3:00 p.m. But, but, but….I had to be in Gonzales for the funeral at 3:00 p.m. What to do?
I ended up dropping Lex off at the Starbucks after having some breakfast, vacuuming the house, and changing into my clothes for the funeral. I left for Gonzales directly from the Starbucks, stopped on the way for fuel and lunch, and ended up in Gonzales by about 2:00 p.m.
Since I was a bit early, I stopped by the local WalMart (the only game in town, really, despite the company’s cringeworthiness) and picked up some silk flowers and a vase so that I could put some flowers on my parents’ graves after my aunt’s burial. Then it was off to the church where a good many people had already gathered.
The funeral mass lasted about an hour, then we processed to the cemetery about two miles away where the burial service took place. That was fairly brief, I got to leave my parents’ flowers, and then it was back to the church fellowship hall for a meal prepared by the ladies of the church.
Holy moly! What a feed! It was a typical German/Czech, South Texan style spread with lots of meat (mostly sausage), heavy on the potatoes and starchy goodness, and long on desserts. I think I located maybe three green vegetables on the table. Oh, well. It was tasty comfort food, and what folks want when someone dies is comfort, I reckon. I stayed and visited with my family for a while before heading back to San Antonio.
I can’t tell you how good it was to get back “home.” As much as I love my whacky family, I’m rather relieved that particular obligation is over. Lex was waiting there for me, her boss having driven her home from the Starbucks. He actually came in and took a look around when he dropped her off. Horror! There were dishes still in the drainer and the house was a little bit of a mess. Good thing I at least vacuumed this morning.
I changed into my swimsuit and coverup and waited for my friend, Roberto, to arrive. He had asked to come over and take advantage of the RV park’s pool, so when he got here just before 9:00 p.m., we did just that. Turns out the deck of the pool overlooks the small pond here in the park. Pretty! There’s also a hot tub! We had a swim and unwound in the hottub before the night host came to lock up the pool at 11:00 p.m.
Roberto came in for a glass of tea before leaving, and then Lex and I called it a night. It was good to finally visit with him again. He gifted us with copies of a couple of local zines in which his comics have been published. In addition to being a teacher and tutor, Roberto is a talented artist, writer, and musician with a quirky sense of humor and keen observational skills. I enjoy reading his work so really appreciated the zines, Saytown Review and Bird Nerd Comix.
Tomorrow is chore day. We need to go grocery shopping so we can pick up things for Sunday’s gathering. HEB Central Market here we come! Lex is getting her new iPhone 4G, and I need to see if I can contact the local greyhound rescue from which I adopted two dogs about meeting and delivering my Baxter’s ashes for burial in their critter graveyard. Oh, I also want to stop by my friend, Susana’s, Tiendita Mayahuel at a nearby flea market to say hello and see what she has for sale.
