How awesome would it be to do the Route 66 tour from Chicago to LA? For us, that’d actually be a coast-to-coast trip seeing as how we’d have to get from Baltimore to Chicago before we could even begin the tour. That’d knock out most of the Midwest, taking us through Western Maryland to PA, then to Ohio, along the border between Indiana and Michigan, into IL. From Chicago, we’d starting heading southwest, hitting MO, KS, OK, TX, NM, AZ, and finally CA, ending up in LA. So with that one trip, we’d get most of the Midwest and the Southwest. The whole thing round trip would be about 5,500 miles! Driving 10 hour days (8 hours on the road, 2 hours worth of stops), we could make it out and back in two weeks. That means no time to hang out, though. To do it right, we’d need Lex’s full three weeks of vacation. That way we could visit all the cool sites along the way. Of course, that one trip would mean no more time off (except holidays) for Lex all year
After that, we’d still have the West, the Northwest, the Southeast, and the Gulf Coast to go. And AK and HI. Don’t think we’re getting to Hawaii in the RV, though. And travelling the Alaska Hwy would take us, well, a while since the entire round trip would amount to 10K miles. And I understand some of the road is rough. Given that we have a 2WD truck, I’m not even sure it’s doable. The animals could actually come with us on that trip since it appears that Canada will allow American critters in as long as they have documented vaccinations and a health certificate. I so need to get my dogs and cat chipped before we start traveling. I just know one of them will shoot out the door eventually and go for a trot in the middle of a national forest and get eaten by bears!
Okay, enough dreaming. We’ve still got to get through this summer and save enough money to get the hitch. And just get INTO the darned RV. I’m finding out about all sorts of things we’re going to need to make life liveable, one of which is this fancy surge protector that will cost $500! It seems electrical supplies at RV parks can be wonky and fry your appliances if you don’t watch out. The protectors keep that from happening. And solar panels. One day I want solar panels so we can camp in comfort in undeveloped places.
One step at a time. We’ve got to get through June before we can take possession of the RV. I’m hoping everything goes according to plan between now and then.
